Let's face it: the 90s is the decade of nostalgia. There's always a time in the past more innocent than now where everybody was so much nicer to each other. Well, that's the premise of Blast from the Past. Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek play an all-American couple obsessed with the cold war politics of the early 60s.Caught up in the 'reds under the beds' paranoia, they even have their own nuclear bunker under the house with supplies to last a 30 year nuclear winter. They just happen to be in the bunker one night when a plane crashes into the house, which they mistake as a nuclear bomb blast. They then spend the next 35 years in the bunker bringing up their child, born in the bunker soon after the 'war'.Adam (a fresh faced and annoying Fraser) is brought up with nothing else to fill his head but conservative, do-gooder American family values. So imagine the 'hilarity' that arises when he is sent up to the surface (90s LA) when the 30 years is up to see if he can replenish the bunker supplies. His father warns him before he gets out there that there might be 'mutants' up there, and he finds a plethora of them: beggars, hoodlums, prostitutes, punks - even the 'regular' people are bent in their own way.Most of the film's intrigue and 'humour' comes from this juxtaposition of societies, and the bunker is a time capsule of America before it went to the dogs. Of course, there's a love story to get the plot chugging along, where Adam finds his Eve (Silverstone), and of course there's a happy ending.The usually reliable Walken is unremarkable as an aging WASPish head of family, and Spacek, quite frankly, was more convincing with a bucket of blood on her head.
